SACHET takes computer skills to rural population of Pakistan

ICT 4 Development

Education and that too good education has always been a distant dream for the poor and marginalized ones in Pakistan who have yet to break the vicious cycle of poverty, illiteracy and disease.

SACHET being an advocate of holistic approach towards human development has considered health, education and poverty alleviation measures as an integral part of its programs.

SACHET has always focused on rural population and struggled to find cost minimal approaches to enable them to meet contemporary challenges of modern life. Under its Education Program, SACHET came up with the idea of taking computer knowledge and skills to rural girls and boys with the hope of enabling them to get economically and socially empowered.

Special courses were designed so that anyone who has completed 5 years of primary schooling can get familiar with simple computer applications.

SACHET’s first computer training centre was established in Village Shahdara in January 2000. Initially four batches comprising 48 students (boys and girls) attended three month courses.

On April 28, 2001, SACHET established a computer laboratory for special persons at the National Training Centre for special persons, G-8 Markaz, Islamabad. The establishment of the centre was a manifestation of SACHET’s belief that society must begin to recognize the abilities rather disabilities of special persons, and must share the burden of education and training of the differently abled in order to brighten the chances of employment and right to dignified life.

The rural centre of Banigala was chosen as the third location for a computer training centre. Inaugurated in May, 2001, the centre also imparted basic education skills.

The centers were also set up in the project areas of Lakhwal, Mohra Noor, Dhoke Jillani, Gagri, Bhandar, Dhoke Syedan, Dhoke Darzian, Sihala Chaudria, Nai Abadi, Niazian, Dhair Mohda, Dhoke Saeed Pur and Gankota Syedan by the end of 2002.

SACHET Computer Centre, Pinyali was established in July 2005 and currently 8 students are enrolled in different courses.

In district Chakwal; 7 computer training centers were established in 2006. District Project Office Chakwal (Urban) was established in 2007 where 2 computer centers have been opened.
